How do you verify a shock is bad? |

KONI FSD shocks, purchased May 2007, mounted on a 1997 Monaco Signature Roadmaster 8 bag chassis
Recently I have became concerned that my "Koni FSD's" are no longer performing as they should. WHen I go over a hump in the road, my RV bounces and bounces. It also doesn't seem to be handling the rough spots and expansion joints on the road like they used to.
I unbolted the bottom of the shock so I could see if there is any resistance to movement. There is resistance both ways, but it takes little effort to retrack and extend them. I feel there should be more resistance. There is no noticeable dead areas when extending or retracking the shocks.
I can remember when these were shipped to me, they were bound to keep them from fully extending. They no longer will extend on there own.
Bought these from "shox.com" and installed them myself so I don't have a dealer to go back to.
Is there any way to determine if these are working properly? |

HI,
When you can work them like an accordian, they need replacement.
If you have your recepit, you can call them, and arrange to exchange them for replacements.
Mine are Bilstien, and you get a "For the life you own the vehicle" warranty, and I think I need to replace my 14 year old shocks too.

I had one shock that could be compressed easily by one hand. It should take some effort to compress a correctly operating shock and it should extend under its own gas pressure in the shock.

That's funny, my FSDs are doing the same thing (MH bounces and rough expansion joints). Bought them direct from Koni in 2006. Guess I need to call the company.

Actually the Koni FSD is not a gas charged shock so it will not expand rapidly like a Bilstein or any other gas charged shock when not installed. There should be somewhat equal resistance in both directions. If this resistance is not there then they should be suspect of needing replacement, or if there are visible leaks. |
