Re: Propane vs LED Lanterns | Yes, you and the others have the right idea. Here in CA. there are many campgrounds that are breeding grounds for skeeters! Gas lanterns seem to really attract the little buggers.

Re: Budget on Camping Gear | You might try your search window for websites as: REI, Eureka, Sears online and stores like WalMart, Target and KMart to get some ideas of prices. It all depends on the size of tents needed as a tip is to always add an extra person to the size needed for storage or to accomodate a pet, length and types (canvas, nylon) of sleeping bags, size of coolers, stoves and lanterns (propane, gas or LED) and the same with air mattresses. I hope this is of some help. My camping experience began at age two with my first trip to Yosemite in October of 1954.

Re: California's Central Coast | Hello Melissa,
If you really like camping right close to the Monterey Bay then I would suggest New Brighton State Beach in Capitola, CA. south of Santa Cruz off Highway 1 and the Park Ave. exit. This is a great campground for families and retired folks and it attracts more RV`s than tents. Next to the cliff there is a large day use picnic area and a restroom with showers. This state beach will close next year as it is on the hit list which is sad. Be sure to make reservations way ahead of time as it is a popular destination for those traveling up and down coastal California.
Happy Camping, Greg Santa Cruz, CA.
